A first for Media219 as we were approached by NBC Telemundo to help them create their virtual set for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
At first we were unsure we could deliver what was being asked as this was new to us. But building on our knowledge of creating 3D models of football stadiums we embraced the challenge.
The brief was to create a perfect 3D model of the Place du Trocadero in Paris. This area consists of two large buildings either side of the main plaza. These buildings are fronted by some incredible statues and the entire area to be mapped covered over 450,000 square meters. The Eiffel tower, surrounding buildings, river area and the gardens down by the plaza all needed creating.
The task was a large one. In total we ended up supplying over 40 statues in high detail along with all the buildings so it could be imported into Unreal Engine and act as the backdrop to the virtual set that Telemundo would create for the daily Olympics coverage.
I don't think I have ever walked so much or taken so many reference photographs before, but it was all very useful as the team created what can only be described as an incredible model.
“I couldn’t imagine what this was going to be when our team started working on it,” says Manashi Mukherjee, VP, technical production, Telemundo. “[The final product] has exceeded everything that I could have imagined. It has been a labor of love, but our team enjoys innovating and being creative.”
Many thanks to all involved with this project and putting faith in us to help create such an amazing set.
